Li Auto L8 Livis First Drive: All-Wire Chassis and UWB Sensors Debut

Autohome's first drive of the new Li Auto L8 Livis reveals a redesigned SUV with LiDAR, UWB proximity sensing, and a three-color light bar, though parking assist prompts need refinement.

Li Auto has updated its flagship L8 SUV with a new Livis variant, and a first drive by Chinese outlet Autohome shows the company pushing its sensor and chassis technology forward. The L8 Livis retains the family design language but adds a Hesai ATL lidar on the roof, a stereo camera below, and a three-color light bar that signals the vehicle's state: white for normal driving, yellow for voice interaction, and blue for assisted parking.

Underneath, the L8 Livis replaces traditional ultrasonic sensors with a UWB (ultra-wideband) near-field sensing system, similar to the larger L9. This eliminates the need for bumper cutouts, giving a cleaner look while improving detection range and response speed. However, Autohome noted the parking assist's alerts are overly sensitive, triggering early, and sometimes linger after obstacles have moved away.

Chassis and Design Upgrades

The Livis variant is the first Li Auto model to feature an all-wire chassis, meaning steering, braking, and throttle are electronically controlled without mechanical links. This enables faster response and easier integration with driver assistance systems. The L8 Livis rides on 22-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires (285/40 R22), a Livis-exclusive option not available on the Ultra trim.

Exterior changes include a relocated license plate frame from the bumper to the tailgate, making room for a solid-state lidar at the rear, and an aerodynamic diffuser below. The side profile is longer and lower than the previous L8, closer to the L7, with a steep D-pillar for a sleek look. The L8 Livis is positioned as a large five-seat SUV, more compact than the L9.

The headlights now feature ADB (adaptive driving beam) technology, which Li Auto had lagged on compared to rivals offering pixel-level lights. Autohome noted the upgrade brings improved brightness but still trails some competitors in lighting innovation.

Sensor Layout and Practicality

Side cameras and solid-state lidar on the fenders support 360-degree views and driver assistance, but Autohome found a quirk: when the front door opens, it blocks the sensor's view of the rear door area, so the rear door only opens slightly until the front door closes. This is a minor inconvenience but shows the complexity of integrating new sensors.

Overall, the L8 Livis represents a significant technology step for Li Auto, combining advanced sensing with a new chassis architecture. Autohome's review suggests the vehicle is competitive in its segment, though software refinements are needed. The L8 Livis is expected to launch in China later this year, with pricing to be announced.
