JD.com expands home cooking service to 16 cities, launches festive chef service

JD.com's JDHJ home services arm is rolling out its on-demand cooking service across 16 Chinese cities, with a new premium 'family chef' offering debuting in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com announced on September 14 that its home services division, JD Household (京东家政), is expanding its on-demand cooking service to 16 cities across China. The service, which first launched in 2025, now covers Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Changsha, Chongqing, Chengdu and other major urban centers, according to IThome.

What the service offers

Customers can book a chef for either three or four hours, during which the professional will prepare two to five dishes tailored to the household's headcount, taste preferences and nutritional needs. The chef uses ingredients provided by the client, and the service includes meal preparation, cooking, and cleaning of the kitchen and dining area.

JD said all its cooking specialists are 100% real-name verified, hold health certificates, and have completed professional culinary training. The company also promises that if a customer is unsatisfied with the result, the chef will redo the dishes on the spot.

New 'family chef' service for Mid-Autumn Festival

To mark the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, JD Household is introducing a premium 'family chef' service, initially available in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. A team of two chefs will come to the customer's home for a four-hour session covering everything from ingredient preparation to full meal cooking and post-meal cleanup. The festive menu offers two flavor options, and all ingredients are sourced from JD's own Seven Fresh (七鲜) supermarket chain, ensuring quality and safety.

Customers can find the service by searching '中秋家宴' (Mid-Autumn family feast) in the JD app, where a promotional offer allows users to reserve a feast valued at 5,999 yuan (about $845) for just 99 yuan (about $14).

JD Household operates as a self-run service, managing the recruitment, background checks, professional training and service standards of its chefs. Training includes knife skills and cooking techniques at the New Oriental culinary school, as well as instruction in food safety and nutrition.

This move reflects JD.com's broader push into lifestyle services, leveraging its logistics and supply chain strengths to offer in-home experiences. For consumers, it adds another option for convenient, professional meal preparation, especially for special occasions like the Mid-Autumn Festival.
