Huayou Cobalt and peers launch global mining sustainability initiative

Chinese battery-materials maker Huayou Cobalt joined more than a dozen global miners at a UN-backed forum in Singapore to publish a joint initiative on sustainable mining, covering green transition, community building and governance.

Chinese battery-materials producer Huayou Cobalt has joined more than a dozen global mining and supply-chain companies in publishing a joint initiative on sustainable mining, according to Chinese automotive outlet Gasgoo.

The Global Mining Sustainability Alliance (GMSA) initiative was launched on the sidelines of the second Global Business High-Quality Development of the Belt and Road summit, hosted by the UN Global Compact in Singapore. Co-founding companies include Huayou Cobalt, Zijin Mining, Jiangxi Copper and Luoyang Molybdenum, Gasgoo reported.

Three pillars: green, community, governance

The initiative is framed around the UN Global Compact's ten principles and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and sets out an action framework along three directions: green transition, community building, and good governance and compliance. It calls on the industry to advance green mine construction, low-carbon technology upgrades and ecological restoration of mining areas, strengthen human-rights protections and responsible supply-chain management, and improve corporate governance and information-disclosure mechanisms.

Huayou Cobalt is a significant player in the new-energy lithium-battery materials sector. The company says it has long pursued a green, low-carbon and circular development approach, embedding sustainability across resource development, materials manufacturing and battery recycling. It has focused on clean production, comprehensive resource utilisation, ecological protection and responsible supply-chain building.

Supply-chain relevance for EV makers

The move matters for the electric-vehicle industry because Huayou Cobalt is a major supplier of cathode materials and cobalt chemicals used in lithium-ion batteries for EVs. Its push for responsible sourcing and disclosure aligns with growing regulatory pressure in Europe and elsewhere on battery supply-chain due diligence.

Huayou said it will use the initiative as a new starting point to deepen communication and cooperation with global mining and supply-chain partners, promote the exchange of best practices, and help coordinate resource development with ecological protection and industrial development with community prosperity.

Gasgoo, which covers China's auto and mobility industries, noted that the initiative was published during the Singapore summit but did not specify an exact date.
