GWM's Tank 500 opens reservations in 27 variants with three powertrains

GWM's Tank brand has opened reservations for 27 variants of the Tank 500 SUV, offering Hi4-T and Hi4-Z plug-in hybrids and a 3.0T V6 petrol version, with prices for the current new-energy models ranging from 335,000 to 385,000 yuan.

GWM's Tank brand has opened reservations for 27 variants of the Tank 500 SUV, offering three powertrain options: Hi4-T and Hi4-Z plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and a 3.0T V6 petrol version. Reservations began at 11:00 Beijing time on October 16, according to Chinese automotive outlet Gasgoo.

The new Tank 500 is positioned as a "full-domain technology luxury SUV," blending urban comfort with off-road capability. The Hi4-Z variant boasts a combined system output of up to 635 kW (852 hp) and a WLTC electric-only range of 201 kilometres (125 miles). The Hi4-T version features a non-decoupled four-wheel-drive system aimed at hardcore off-roading, while the petrol model pairs a 3.0T V6 engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system.

Customers who place a deposit during the early-bird period can enjoy a 3,000 yuan (about $423) deposit that counts as 9,000 yuan (about $1,268) toward the final purchase, plus optional equipment benefits worth up to 12,000 yuan (about $1,690). The official launch price and on-sale date have yet to be announced.

Enhanced cabin and driver assistance

The updated Tank 500 introduces a new Danxia Red exterior colour and a black-and-grey interior. Inside, the cabin features a 15.6-inch high-definition dual screen, a separate entertainment screen for the front passenger, and a 22-speaker audio system.

Driver assistance is upgraded to Coffee Pilot 4.0, built on a VLA large model and Thor-U chip, with 27 sensors supporting full-scenario NOA (navigation on autopilot) assistance. This marks a significant step up from the previous generation, enhancing both highway and urban driving support.

Pricing and positioning

The current Tank 500 new-energy models are priced between 335,000 and 385,000 yuan (approximately $47,200 to $54,200) as Chinese guide prices before taxes and incentives. The expanded lineup aims to cover a wide range of scenarios, from daily commuting to outdoor adventures, strengthening Tank's presence in the luxury off-road SUV segment.

With 27 variants, the Tank 500 now offers more choices than ever, catering to different powertrain preferences and feature requirements. The move is part of GWM's broader strategy to solidify its position in China's competitive SUV market, where plug-in hybrids are gaining traction as a bridge between traditional fuel vehicles and full battery-electric models.
