Geely's Galaxy Starship 8 spied in China, likely to be a PHEV

Spy shots suggest Geely is readying a large plug-in hybrid SUV under its Galaxy Starship series, possibly called the Galaxy Starship 8, with dimensions close to 4.96 metres in length and a 2.9-metre wheelbase.

Geely appears to be preparing a new large plug-in hybrid SUV under its Galaxy Starship family, according to spy shots published by Chinese outlet NetEase Auto. The heavily camouflaged test vehicle is believed to be the production version of a model internally codenamed P166, which Geely has previously confirmed is in the works.

The outlet notes that the new car is not the Galaxy M8 that Geely has already filed with Chinese regulators, but rather a separate model that could be named Galaxy Starship 8. Official confirmation is still pending, but the design language visible in the images matches the existing Starship lineup, with clean body lines, a full-width light bar and a tall bonnet that gives the front end a tech-forward, imposing look.

Design and dimensions

The front bumper features air intakes on both sides, adding a sporty touch, while the rear is squared-off to suit the SUV's positioning. A full-width LED tail light bar and twin exhaust outlets are visible, the latter confirming the vehicle is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The test car measures 4,955 mm long, 1,960 mm wide and 1,769 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm.

Inside, the cabin layout is expected to follow the family style, likely featuring a dual-screen setup that combines the central infotainment display with a passenger-side entertainment screen. Geely has not released official interior images yet.

Powertrain details still under wraps

No powertrain specifications have been disclosed, but given the exhaust outlets and Geely's current product strategy, the Galaxy Starship 8 is expected to use a plug-in hybrid system. The company has been rolling out PHEV variants across its Galaxy lineup to complement its battery-electric (BEV) offerings.

According to NetEase Auto, more details about the vehicle will be released as official information becomes available. The Galaxy Starship 8 would join a growing family of Geely models targeting the mid-to-large SUV segment in China, where competition from BYD, Changan and others is intense.
