Geely's Galaxy brand has entered China's fast-growing hardcore off-road new-energy segment with the global launch of the Ship 700, a rugged SUV that blends traditional off-road capability with modern comfort and AI-assisted driving aids. The model went on sale in Hangzhou on October 10 with a limited-time launch price starting at 169,800 yuan (about $23,900), according to Chinese outlet 电动邦 (EV Kingdom).
Built on a new native off-road architecture
The Ship 700 is not a simple electrified version of a conventional off-roader. Instead, it rides on Geely's GTA (Galaxy Terrain Architecture), a purpose-built new-energy off-road platform. The key innovation is an integrated frame design that embeds the ladder frame into the body shell, a first in the industry. Geely claims the body achieves a torsional stiffness of 44,180 Nm per degree, more than 20 percent higher than comparable models with separate frames, while saving 80 to 100 kg in weight and 40 to 70 mm of vertical space.
The suspension setup includes double wishbones up front, with dual-chamber air springs and continuously controlled damping on higher trims. Geely quotes an 80 km/h moose test result on tarmac and 72.1 km/h on sand, respectable figures for a mid-to-large SUV that measures 5,085 mm long with a 2,900 mm wheelbase.
Three powertrain options are offered: a 1.5T two-wheel-drive version, a 1.5T three-motor four-wheel-drive, and a range-topping 2.0T three-motor four-wheel-drive. The top variant produces a combined 830 kW (1,129 hp) and 13,920 Nm of peak wheel torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.95 seconds and reaching a top speed of 220 km/h. The front axle uses a 230 kW motor, while two independent wheel motors at the rear each deliver 220 kW. An electronically controlled mechanical rear differential lock can engage fully in 0.2 seconds, and torque can be distributed from 0 to 100 percent between the wheels.
Battery, range, and safety features
All versions come with a 47.14 kWh battery pack using CATL cells, supporting peak 6C fast charging that replenishes from 10 to 80 percent in about 8 minutes and 25 seconds. The CLTC electric-only range is up to 305 km, with a combined range of up to 1,770 km and a minimum 5 L/100 km fuel consumption when the battery is depleted. (CLTC figures tend to be optimistic; a WLTP estimate would be roughly 15-20 percent lower.)
The Ship 700 also introduces an AI-powered all-terrain mode that uses neural network algorithms and camera vision to automatically detect snow, mud, sand, and rock surfaces, adjusting throttle and torque output accordingly. A one-touch intelligent climbing function engages low-range gearing, locks the rear differential, and raises the suspension to maximum height. In urban settings, the vehicle is equipped with Geely's Qianli Haohan G-ASD assistance system, including a Thor-U chip and lidar, supporting door-to-door navigation-assisted driving, highway NOA (navigation on assisted driving), and city NOA.
Safety is a major focus. The body uses a 6-vertical, 7-horizontal, 8-ring structure with 100 percent ultra-high-strength steel in the passenger compartment, and an integrated roll cage with 11 tubes rated up to 2,200 MPa. The battery pack has an 11-layer protection system, and Geely claims the Shen Dun battery safety system has passed 36 full-scenario tests, 23 of which exceed new national standards. A notable feature is emergency floating: if water depth reaches 800 mm, the system automatically activates a floating mode that can move at up to 7 km/h for about 40 minutes. Geely has announced it will open the related patents to the industry free of charge.
The interior offers a spacious cabin with an 80.3 percent space efficiency, a flat double bed when the second-row seats are folded, a 1,050-liter trunk expandable to 1,903 liters, and comfort features like 14-point massage seats, a 280 mm leg rest for the front passenger, and an 18.5-liter refrigerator. The Flyme Auto 2 system powers a five-screen setup with a 23-speaker, 2,000-watt audio system.
The Ship 700's launch marks Geely Galaxy's entry into the new-energy hardcore off-road market, a segment that is gaining popularity in China. With a starting price of 169,800 yuan and Geely Galaxy's base of over 2.7 million users, the model aims to compete in the 200,000-yuan class. Geely says order data looked strong in the first 12 minutes after launch, though sustained sales performance remains to be seen.
