FAW-Volkswagen opens pre-sales for ID. AURA T6 family BEV from 135,900 yuan

FAW-Volkswagen has opened pre-sales for the ID. AURA T6, its first model under the new ID.AURA electric sequence, with four trims priced between 135,900 and 169,900 yuan (about $19,100-$23,900). The family-oriented BEV offers two CLTC range options, optional lidar-based ADAS co-developed with Horizon Robotics, and a 90-litre sealed front trunk.

FAW-Volkswagen unveiled pre-sale pricing for its ID. AURA T6 at a launch event in Hangzhou on August 28, positioning the compact electric SUV as the first production model in the joint venture's new ID.AURA battery-electric sequence. Four trims are priced between 135,900 yuan and 169,900 yuan (about $19,100 to $23,900), a Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives, according to the outlet 电动邦 (DianDongBang).

The line-up splits along two clear axes. The entry-level 540 Pro offers a CLTC range of 540 km (about 336 miles); the other three trims — 660 Pro, 660 Max and 660 Ultra — deliver a CLTC-rated 660 km (about 410 miles, roughly 530-560 km or 329-348 miles WLTP est.) and use cells from CATL. Stepping from the 660 Pro to the 660 Max adds 10,000 yuan (about $1,400) and brings a 192-line lidar, a Horizon Robotics Journey 6H chip rated at 420 TOPS, urban and highway navigation assistance, an end-to-end ADAS architecture, and remote and memory parking functions. The top 660 Ultra adds another 10,000 yuan for matrix headlights, 20-inch wheels, a front passenger "queen seat," front seat massage, an AR head-up display and interior monitoring.

FAW-Volkswagen is leaning on local partners for the technology it has historically been slow to develop in-house. The ADAS suite uses the HS8 end-to-end solution from Carizon, a joint venture between Volkswagen and Horizon Robotics, together with the Journey 6H chip, a 192-line lidar and 25 sensors. The cockpit runs on a 4nm automotive-grade chip with a 15.6-inch 2.5K centre display, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 25.8-inch AR-HUD, plus voice recognition covering four zones and nine Chinese dialects. An AI assistant, trip planner, occupant-remaining alert and fatigue monitoring are tied into local lifestyle services, reflecting development aimed squarely at Chinese user habits.

Family-first packaging

The ID. AURA T6 measures 4,811 mm long, 1,879 mm wide and 1,648 mm tall with a 2,836 mm wheelbase. FAW-Volkswagen quotes an interior space utilisation rate of 85.3 percent, a boot volume ranging from 576 to 1,796 litres, and a 90-litre sealed front trunk — a first for the Volkswagen brand in China — plus 38 storage compartments. Inside, the car offers a front passenger queen seat, a flat-fold "bed mode" stretching to about 1.8 metres, rear tray tables, vehicle-to-load (V2L) external power and exterior speakers, with magnetic mounting points in the second row for accessory screens and controls.

The exterior follows what the company calls "practical naturalism," with small square headlights and a full-width light bar, a drag coefficient of 0.245, six paint colours and three interior themes. The chassis uses a MacPherson front and multi-link rear suspension with frequency-selective damping, tuned specifically for Chinese speed bumps and damaged roads. A 4.75-metre turning radius, staggered-width tyres and near 50:50 weight distribution aim to balance city manoeuvrability with highway stability, while a gentle regenerative braking option is designed to reduce motion sickness for passengers.

Both battery versions use FAW-Volkswagen's in-house nine-in-one electric drive and nine-source heat pump. The smaller-battery version claims a 12.5 kWh per 100 km consumption figure, and fast charging from 30 to 80 percent takes about 22 to 24 minutes. Safety hardware follows the familiar German over-engineering approach: a cage body, multi-layer sill beams, six to seven airbags, and a battery pack that underwent more than 400 tests — roughly eight times the national standard — including thermal runaway, submersion and salt-spray validation.

Warranty as a differentiator

FAW-Volkswagen is also using after-sales promises to ease buyer concerns about new technology. The ID. AURA T6 comes with lifetime warranty on the vehicle and three-electric system, liability coverage for thermal incidents and battery degradation beyond limits, coverage for intelligent parking and first-year ADAS accidents, plus free courtesy cars and pickup-and-delivery service.

The ID. AURA T6 is a deliberately steady move into the mainstream BEV segment by a joint venture that has often been criticised for lagging on smart features. By splitting the line-up into clear range, ADAS and comfort tiers, and by outsourcing the intelligence to local specialists, FAW-Volkswagen is betting that pragmatic family buyers will accept a less flashy but more complete package. Whether the final pricing and market response confirm that bet remains to be seen.
