Dongfeng Fengshen L8+ launches from 129,900 yuan with 700TOPS ADAS

Dongfeng's Fengshen L8+ plug-in hybrid SUV launched in China with four trims from 129,900 yuan ($18,300) after trade-in, featuring a 700TOPS Nvidia Thor-U chip and lidar-based urban NOA, claiming zero-intervention autonomous driving on Everest's 108 switchbacks.

Dongfeng's Fengshen L8+ plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV officially launched in China on October 23, priced from 129,900 yuan (about $18,300) after a limited-time trade-in subsidy, according to Chinese outlet D1EV. The model is positioned as a tech-heavy compact SUV, bringing a 700TOPS computing platform and lidar-based urban NOA (city advanced driver assistance) into the 150,000-yuan price segment.

The L8+ is offered in four trims: a 220KM Excellence edition at 139,900 yuan guide price (129,900 yuan trade-in), a 220KM Flagship at 149,900 yuan (139,900 yuan trade-in), a 220KM Lidar Excellence with 700TOPS at 159,900 yuan (149,900 yuan trade-in), and a 220KM Lidar Flagship at 169,900 yuan (159,900 yuan trade-in). All prices are Chinese guide prices before taxes and incentives. Buyers who order and take delivery by November 30 can access up to seven benefits, including a 10,000-yuan factory trade-in subsidy, a five-year loan with two years at zero interest, a free 8,000-yuan 19-speaker WANOS panoramic sound system, and a 10-year unlimited-mileage warranty for first owners.

700TOPS compute and lidar as standard

The headline feature is the Tianyuan Zhijia T800 system, which Dongfeng claims is the first in the world to debut on the L8+. It uses the same Nvidia Thor-U chip found in Xiaomi's Pengcheng system, delivering 700TOPS of computing power—about 3.5 times the level of mainstream rivals in this class, the company says. The car also carries a Hesai ATX semi-solid-state lidar on the roof, a clear visual differentiator from the standard L8.

On the software side, the T800 integrates Momenta's R7 world model. Dongfeng claims its capabilities are comparable to Huawei's Qiankun ADS Max, and notes that the L8+ is among the first production vehicles globally to ship with the full R7 model without needing an over-the-air update. By contrast, some higher-end models such as the Volkswagen ID.ERA 9X, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Cadillac XT5 PHEV are only just adopting the model and may require OTA updates to unlock full features.

The company says the L8+ supports true parking-space-to-parking-space driving: it can start from a parking spot, navigate out of a garage, drive to a destination, and park itself with zero intervention. It also offers remote parking, self-drawn parking lines, and memory parking across up to seven floors and three kilometres, handling narrow, dead-end and unmarked spaces.

Range and comfort focus

Power comes from the company's four-speed Mach hybrid system with a thermal efficiency of 45.18%. A 30.3kWh battery provides 220km of CLTC pure-electric range, and total CLTC range exceeds 1,500km—enough, Dongfeng says, to drive from Chengdu to Lhasa without refuelling. CLTC figures are generally 15-20% more optimistic than WLTP, so the equivalent WLTP range would be roughly 180km and 1,275km (est.) respectively.

The L8+ measures 4,762mm long, 1,910mm wide and 1,686mm tall, with a 2,825mm wheelbase—generous for a compact SUV. Comfort features include a cloud-soft sofa, rear ceiling entertainment screen, rear fridge, aviation tray tables, the 19-speaker WANOS audio, and a heated capacitive steering wheel, along with ventilated and memory front seats and heated seats for all rows.

Before launch, Dongfeng demonstrated the L8+'s driver assistance in a live televised challenge on the 108 switchbacks of the road to Mount Everest, claiming zero interventions through hairpin turns, cliffside parking, wandering livestock, washboard roads and truck encounters. D1EV reports that in the 130,000-170,000 yuan PHEV SUV segment, the L8+ undercuts rivals such as the BYD Song Plus DM-i and Geely Galaxy L7 on price while adding lidar and 700TOPS compute.
