Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles launches D600 platform with 8,700 tentative orders

Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles unveiled its new modular D600 platform in Wuhan, covering five energy routes and securing 8,700 tentative orders from ten strategic customers.

Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles, the truck-making arm of Dongfeng Motor Group, unveiled its new-generation modular platform, the D600, at a global launch event in Wuhan on October 10. The platform is designed to cover five energy routes—fuel, gas, electric, hydrogen, and ammonia—and is central to the company's push into new-energy commercial vehicles. According to Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles, the platform took five years to develop and involved 11 parallel projects, spanning 34 market segments and 143 typical use cases, with compatibility for five major global regulatory systems and 28 countries.

A platform for all energies

Unlike retrofits of conventional trucks, the D600 is a ground-up, purpose-built architecture for new-energy vehicles, integrating hardware, vehicle architecture, and control systems from the start. The company claims its energy consumption is 8% lower than that of converted electric models. The platform underpins a broader strategy called “one platform, five pillars,” which extends beyond vehicle manufacturing to include energy supply, financing, services, and digital operations.

At the launch, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles showcased a range of models built on the D600, including the Dongfeng Tianlong KH hydrogen fuel-cell tractor for long-haul routes and a battery-electric version for regional transport. Also displayed were battery-swap and ultra-fast-charging variants of the Tianlong KL, a pure ammonia hybrid model, and L2+ assisted-driving versions. In total, 18 vehicles were exhibited, covering applications from long-haul logistics to mining and express delivery.

The company also presented nine technology exhibits, including the DAi14 ammonia internal-combustion engine, an electric drive axle, a 300 kW hydrogen fuel-cell system, a high-safety battery pack, thermal management modules, domain controllers, and the DEA3.0 electronic and electrical architecture.

Orders and outlook

Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles signed tentative agreements with ten strategic customers for 8,700 vehicles, spanning ammonia-fuel, hydrogen, electric, and intelligent-driving models, as well as overseas markets. These are intent orders, not final deliveries, and their conversion will be a key test of the platform's commercial viability.

The company emphasized that its approach is not to bet on a single powertrain but to offer multiple energy options tailored to different operating scenarios. This strategy acknowledges that commercial-vehicle electrification faces challenges beyond powertrain changes, including range, refueling/recharging infrastructure, operating costs, and total cost of ownership.

Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles said the platform development involved visits to 63 cities and in-depth interviews with over 700 users, yielding more than 2,300 requirements and feedback points. The company plans to integrate vehicles, energy infrastructure, financing, services, and digital capabilities into complete transport solutions, shifting from selling trucks to providing integrated mobility services.

The launch marks a significant step in Dongfeng's new-energy strategy, but the long-term value of the D600 platform will depend on real-world performance, delivery, and lifecycle costs. As the company noted, the platform's release is just the beginning; the real challenge lies in converting technical capability into tangible operational benefits for customers.
