BYD's Seal 08 EV has demonstrated that long-distance electric travel can be nearly as convenient as refueling a gasoline car, according to a 6,000-kilometer (3,728-mile) road test along China's eastern coast. The test, reported by NetEase Auto, saw the large sedan recharge from 10% to 97% in as little as 9 minutes at BYD's flash-charging stations, challenging the notion that EVs are impractical for long trips.
The 18-day journey began in Qingdao and followed National Highway G228 southward, covering 17 cities and using 20 flash-charging stations. The route included long highway stretches, urban driving, and crowded coastal service areas, deliberately avoiding favorable conditions. The test vehicles were the Seal 08 EV in 905-km and 785-km CLTC range variants, both equipped with BYD's native flash-charging platform.
According to the report, the charging speed matched official claims: from 10% to 97% typically took under 9 minutes, and the 10% to 60% segment was even quicker. The power curve held high output across a wide state-of-charge range, with consistent results for both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. This means a driver can add enough range for hundreds of kilometers in the time it takes to buy a drink at a service area.
Charging network makes the difference
The test emphasized that fast charging alone is insufficient without a dense network. BYD's 'Flash Charging China' initiative has already built 10,000 stations as of August, with plans to double that to about 20,000 by the end of 2026, including coverage at nearly one-third of highway service areas. On average, stations are spaced roughly 100 kilometers (62 miles) apart along major routes.
This density changed the test team's behavior. Instead of pre-planning charging stops, they simply searched for a flash station when the battery dropped to one-third, and always found one within range. The high charging speeds also meant empty stalls were common, avoiding queues. The report concluded that the real value of flash charging lies in the network, not just the speed.
Beyond charging, the Seal 08 impressed with its driving assistance and comfort. The car features BYD's 'God's Eye B' ADAS with lidar, offering highway and city navigation assistance that handled lane changes, ramp merges, and intersections. The adaptive air suspension with road preview smoothed rough surfaces, while rear-wheel steering (up to ±7 degrees) made the 5.15-meter-long sedan agile in tight spaces.
The cabin, with 84.4% space efficiency, includes dual zero-gravity front seats, ventilated and massaging seats, double-glazed windows, and a 20-speaker Devialet audio system. The report noted that the car's low wind noise earned a perfect score in a China Automotive Technology and Research Center evaluation.
The test concluded that BYD's flash-charging technology and network have changed the calculus for long-distance EV travel. While the experience depends on station availability in remote areas, the direction is clear: when charging is as fast as refueling and stations are plentiful, range anxiety becomes a thing of the past.
