BYD's Denza brand has officially launched its new Han EV flagship sedan in China, a D-segment electric car that aims to challenge the upper end of the market with a combination of large dimensions, long range and fast charging. The model went on sale on October 13 with three variants priced between 235,900 yuan and 275,900 yuan (about $33,200 to $38,900), according to Chinese automotive outlet DianDongBang.
The Han EV measures 5,256 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,510 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,130 mm, placing it firmly in the D-segment category. BYD claims a cabin space utilization rate of 90.8 percent, with 50 storage compartments, a 500-liter trunk and a 130-liter front trunk. The rear seats can fold flat to create a 1,960 by 1,420 mm sleeping area.
Powertrain and range
All versions come with BYD's second-generation blade battery, a 102.3 kWh pack that gives the rear-wheel-drive model a CLTC range of 1,008 km and the all-wheel-drive version 880 km. CLTC figures are typically 15-20 percent more optimistic than WLTP, so the equivalent WLTP range would be roughly 840-860 km for the RWD model (est.). The car's low drag coefficient of 0.197 and energy consumption of 11.5 kWh per 100 km contribute to the efficiency.
Charging is a key selling point: BYD says the Han EV can charge from 10 to 70 percent in just 5 minutes and from 10 to 97 percent in 9 minutes using its flash charging technology, with only 3 minutes added at -30 degrees Celsius. The company plans to have 20,000 flash charging stations by the end of this year. The RWD version accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, while the AWD version does it in 3.3 seconds, with a top speed of 270 km/h.
The Han EV also features rear-wheel active steering with a maximum rear steering angle of 7 degrees, giving a turning radius of just 4.95 meters, and an intelligent crab walk mode for oblique movement. The suspension is a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear setup, with standard YunNian-A dual-chamber air suspension offering 100 mm of height adjustment and two levels of stiffness.
Interior and technology
Inside, the Han EV comes with zero-gravity front seats with NAPPA leather, ventilation, heating and massage functions on higher trims. The flagship version adds a 12-degree power-adjustable rear seat backrest, four-way power leg rests, and an electric footrest for the right rear passenger. Audio is provided by 25 speakers on the mid trim and 31 Devialet speakers with 7.1.4 channel layout on the flagship.
Standard driver assistance includes BYD's God's Eye B system with one lidar, 11 cameras, 3 millimeter-wave radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors, supporting urban navigation, highway navigation and automated parking. The AI assistant 'Didi Xia' is also standard.
The base 1008KM RWD LiDAR Zunxiang version at 235,900 yuan already includes the rear-wheel steering, air suspension, God's Eye B and the 1,008 km range, making it a strong value proposition. The flagship adds a larger 3nm cockpit chip, a 7-liter refrigerator, a streaming rearview mirror and rear entertainment screens. The top 880KM AWD LiDAR flagship at 275,900 yuan adds all-wheel drive, adaptive high beams, smart dimming privacy glass and 21-inch wheels, but reduces range to 880 km.
With its aggressive pricing and generous standard equipment, the Han EV is positioned to shake up the D-segment electric sedan market in China, offering a compelling alternative to established players.
