BYD sold 440,293 vehicles worldwide in August, up 17.8% year on year and 4.15% month on month, according to monthly figures the company released on September 1 and reported by Sina Auto. The group's passenger-vehicle sales reached 433,384 units, compared with 371,502 in August 2025, an increase of about 16.7%.
Overseas business continued to outpace the rest of the group. BYD sold 188,746 passenger cars and pickup trucks in overseas markets in August, up 134.6% year on year, and exported 189,466 new-energy vehicles in total during the month. Overseas sales accounted for close to 40% of BYD's overall volume in August, the company said.
Brand breakdown and year-to-date sales
BYD reports its passenger-car business in four reporting lines. Dynasty and Ocean, the two volume networks that cover most of BYD's mainstream models, sold 375,373 vehicles in August. Fangchengbao, the off-road and performance brand, contributed 41,568 units. Denza, the premium brand, delivered 16,001 vehicles. Yangwang, the ultra-luxury marque, sold 442 units.
Taken together, BYD's group sales in the first eight months of 2026 reached 2,668,015 vehicles. Cumulative overseas sales of passenger vehicles and pickups in that period came to 1,157,954 units. BYD also said its global cumulative sales of new-energy vehicles have now passed 17.8 million units.
What the numbers show
The August report highlights how important exports have become to BYD. Overseas volume grew by more than 130% year on year in August, while total group growth was 17.8%. If overseas deliveries continue at their current pace, they are likely to account for an even larger share of BYD's sales by the end of the year.
BYD did not break August sales down by powertrain, so the figures cover both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models in the company's definition of new-energy vehicles. The announcement also did not include a regional split of overseas sales. The data are company-provided and unaudited, as with other Chinese automakers' monthly releases, but they remain the main public gauge of BYD's performance from month to month.
The cumulative global total of more than 17.8 million new-energy vehicles sold by BYD covers passenger cars, pickup trucks and commercial vehicles sold under all of the company's brands since it began producing new-energy vehicles. Its next monthly report, expected in early October, will show whether overseas growth has continued at the same pace in September.
