China's August 2026 sedan and SUV sales rankings show Galaxy Xingyuan leading sedans with 60,955 units, while BYD Yuan tops SUVs with 64,170 units, according to Gasgoo Auto Research Institute.

China's passenger car market saw distinct leaders in its sedan and SUV segments in August 2026, with the Galaxy Xingyuan topping the sedan chart and the BYD Yuan leading SUVs, according to data from Gasgoo Auto Research Institute.

The Galaxy Xingyuan, a battery-electric (BEV) model from Geely's Galaxy brand, recorded 60,955 units sold, making it the only sedan to exceed 60,000 units. The BYD Seagull followed with 36,106 units, and the Tesla Model 3 ranked third with 30,469 units. The top 10 sedan list was entirely made up of new energy vehicles (NEVs), which include BEVs, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and range-extenders (EREVs).

BYD placed three models in the sedan top 10: the Seagull, Dolphin (29,147 units), and Seal 06 (17,066 units), showcasing its broad product coverage. Other notable entries included the MG4 from MG (23,454 units), the Wuling Bingo (22,608 units), the Chery QQ3 EV (19,103 units), the Xiaomi SU7 (16,518 units), and the Geely Emgrand (14,250 units). The presence of both domestic and international brands highlights the competitive mix in China's sedan market.

SUV segment: BYD Yuan leads, domestic brands dominate

In the SUV segment, the BYD Yuan topped the chart with 64,170 units, outpacing the Tesla Model Y (46,653 units) by over 17,000 units. The Geely Boyue/Boyue Pro (33,515 units) and Chery Tiggo 7/7 Plus (32,930 units) took third and fourth places, respectively, with the Leapmotor A10 close behind at 32,214 units. Domestic brands occupied four of the top five positions.

BYD's presence extended beyond the Yuan, with the Song Ultra (23,200 units) ranking eighth and the Fangchengbao Titan 7 (30,572 units) sixth, reflecting the company's multi-brand strategy. Chery also showed strength with the Tiggo 7/7 Plus and the JAECOO J5 (28,800 units) in fourth and seventh, respectively, while the Jetour Traveler rounded out the top 10 with 21,460 units. The Changan Qiyuan Q05 (22,680 units) also made the list.

The SUV rankings illustrate intense competition among multiple brands and models, with product lineups and niche coverage playing crucial roles in sales performance. The data, compiled by Gasgoo Auto Research Institute and republished by D1EV, underscores the continued dominance of new energy vehicles in China's passenger car market.
