BAIC Off-Road, a subsidiary of Chinese automaker BAIC, has unveiled a new brand called Xingtan and opened pre-sales for its first model, the 5X SUV. The vehicle, positioned as a spacious smart SUV, is available in both battery-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions, with pre-sale prices ranging from 139,900 to 184,900 yuan (about $19,700 to $26,000) before taxes and incentives, according to NetEase Auto.
Design and space
The Xingtan 5X features a boxy, rugged exterior design that BAIC says balances SUV toughness with everyday practicality. It measures 4,865 mm long, 2,000 mm wide, and 1,910 mm tall, with a wheelbase that supports a claimed 88.6% cabin space efficiency. The interior offers 61 storage compartments, a trunk height near one meter, and a maximum cargo volume of 2,065 liters. The BEV version adds a 96-liter front trunk.
Seating flexibility is a key selling point: front seats can fold flat to create a 1.8-meter-long flat space in the second row, useful for camping or hauling large items. Standard comfort features include front seat ventilation and heating, while higher trims add rear seat ventilation, heating, and massage functions. The cabin also includes a 23-speaker audio system tuned by the National Centre for the Performing Arts, dual 15.6-inch displays, and a 8.2-liter temperature-controlled storage box.
Powertrain and range
The BEV version offers a CLTC range of 625 kilometers (about 388 miles), which translates to an estimated WLTP range of roughly 500-530 km (310-330 miles) - CLTC figures are typically 15-20% more optimistic than WLTP. It uses an 800-volt architecture that can add significant range in 14.5 minutes of fast charging. The PHEV version provides a pure-electric CLTC range of 310 km (about 193 miles) and a combined range of 1,350 km (about 839 miles), powered by dual 200 kW (268 hp) electric motors that accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.
The Xingtan 5X is equipped with Huawei's Qiankun ADS 5 Pro advanced driver assistance system, featuring 27 sensors and a suite of 24 active safety functions. It supports automated parking and a 120-meter reverse tracking feature. Off-road capability includes a 228 mm ground clearance, 26-degree approach and 28-degree departure angles, and a 600 mm wading depth. Four-wheel-drive versions add a center differential lock, rear axle lock, and 14 terrain modes.
BAIC emphasizes safety with a reinforced body structure and a proprietary battery pack positioned 35 mm higher than the subframe, protected by a high-strength impact beam and skid plate. The brand leverages 68 years of BAIC's off-road vehicle expertise.
Pre-sale incentives include free upgrades to the premium audio system and certain paint colors, a five-year financing plan with zero down payment for the first two years, lifetime warranty on the battery and electric motor, and a free charging pile. The Xingtan 5X is now available for pre-order in China, with deliveries expected to begin later.
