Audi RS Q5 spy shots reveal first-ever RS version, due in 2027

Audi's first RS Q5 has been spotted testing near the Nürburgring, with a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 and an electric motor for 639 hp. The model is expected to debut in 2027, according to Chinese outlet 车质网 (Chezhiwang).

Audi's first-ever RS version of the Q5 has been caught undergoing testing near the Nürburgring, with the high-performance SUV expected to make its official debut in 2027, according to Chinese outlet 车质网 (Chezhiwang).

The prototype, photographed during testing, shows several tell-tale RS cues: oval exhaust tips, wider wheel arches and appropriately sized performance tyres. A yellow high-voltage warning sticker on the body confirms the vehicle is electrified.

Plug-in hybrid powertrain

The RS Q5 will be powered by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system combining a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine with an electric motor. The combined output is 639 metric horsepower (about 470 kW) and 825 Nm of torque, with a 25.9 kWh battery pack allowing limited electric-only driving. However, the battery adds significant weight; Chezhiwang notes that the RS Q5 could tip the scales at over 2.4 tonnes, similar to the Audi RS5 Avant.

It remains unclear whether the RS Q5 will feature Audi's electromechanical rear differential, known as Dynamic Torque Control.

Strategic significance for Volkswagen Group

The timing of the RS Q5's launch is notable. Volkswagen Group is streamlining its model lineup to cut development and production costs. The RS Q5 also has implications beyond Audi: Porsche ended production of the petrol-powered Macan in late July, with a successor expected in 2028 that remains deeply technically related to the Q5.

Deeper technical collaboration between Audi and Porsche within the group is helping to share R&D costs. If Porsche develops a high-performance version of the next Macan based on shared technology, the new RS Q5 could preview the capabilities of this new powertrain platform.

Chezhiwang says it will continue to follow and report on further news about the RS Q5.
