Alibaba's AI coding tool Qoder CLI has taken a step toward greater flexibility. Starting with version v1.1.50, the command-line interface now allows personal edition users to integrate custom AI models, according to IThome.
Qoder CLI, launched by Alibaba in October 2025, is a command-line tool for AI-assisted programming, part of the company's Qoder agentic coding platform. The update, announced on September 12, enables users to plug in their own models by entering an API address, model ID, and API key.
This feature is available on both the international and Chinese (CN) versions, and works with free and paid personal accounts alike. Users can specify the context window size based on their model's actual specifications; if left blank, Qoder CLI defaults to managing a 128K context.
How to connect a custom model
The setup process is straightforward. Users navigate to the Custom tab (using Tab or arrow keys), select "Add custom model" and press Enter, or simply press 'n' to open the add wizard. They then choose a protocol—either OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic-compatible—and fill in the Base URL, Model ID, Name, API Key, and model capabilities before saving.
This move reflects a broader trend in the developer tools space: enabling users to bring their own models rather than being locked into a single provider. For developers, it means they can use Qoder CLI with models they already have access to, whether from open-source projects or other commercial providers.
The update follows other recent Qoder developments, including a Mobile Use plugin that bridges HarmonyOS, Android, and iOS for agent-based workflows, and an upgrade to Alibaba Cloud's Token Plan personal edition that adds 12 types of Agent Harness tools.
By opening up custom model support, Alibaba positions Qoder CLI as a more neutral platform in the increasingly competitive AI coding assistant market. It also aligns with the company's broader strategy of building an open ecosystem around its Qwen models, which have been widely adopted in both domestic and international markets.
