Volkswagen's Chinese joint venture, Volkswagen Anhui, has launched its new smart electric coupe, the ID.09, with prices starting at 169,900 yuan (about $23,900) for the base MAX trim, rising to 249,900 yuan (about $35,200) for the top-spec Ultra. The model is the latest addition to the brand's ID. family, joining the ID.06, ID.07, and ID.08 to cover a range of customer lifestyles, according to Chinese automotive outlet NetEase Auto.
Design and technology
The ID.09 features a sleek fastback design with a 5,081 mm body length and a 3,030 mm wheelbase, which the company claims is the longest in its class. The exterior includes frameless doors, a illuminated VW emblem, and a "wolf head" logo integrated into the rear. Inside, the cabin boasts an 85-inch augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD) with 12,000 nits brightness, projecting navigation and safety alerts onto the road ahead.
The car is equipped with a DLP (digital light processing) projector headlight system, which can cast a light carpet and display driving guidance directly on the road surface. The ID.09 also features the "Xingyun" driver assistance system, built on a VLA (vision-language-action) end-to-end large model, supporting both highway and city NOA (navigation on autopilot). It comes with a Turing AI chip delivering 750 TOPS of computing power and 26 sensors, enabling "parking space to parking space" assisted driving, which can memorize up to 10 routes of up to 100 km each.
Performance and charging
The ID.09 is the first Volkswagen model to feature 5C ultra-fast charging, allowing 500 km of range to be added in 10 minutes, and a 10-80% charge in under 12 minutes. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive version delivers a combined 370 kW (about 496 hp), paired with an air suspension and adaptive damping. The car is powered by cells from CATL, with a CLTC-rated range of 755 km (approximately 604-641 km WLTP est.).
Volkswagen Anhui emphasizes its "golden standard" of durability, subjecting the ID.09 to 3.5 million kilometers of all-scenario endurance testing, including two winter and two summer cycles. The company, established in 2022 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen Group China, operates a hybrid sales model combining direct brand stores and agency partnerships, with plans to expand to 200 sales outlets by the end of 2026.
