Saint-Gobain smart panoramic roof wins China's 2026 Jinji Award for best applied technology

Saint-Gobain's 'Charming Dome Skylight' panoramic glass roof, which combines zone-based dimming, thermal management and ambient lighting, has won the 2026 Jinji Award for Best Technology Practice Application at the eighth edition of the awards hosted by Gasgoo in Shanghai.

Saint-Gobain's automotive glass division has won the 2026 Jinji Award for Best Technology Practice Application for its 'Charming Dome Skylight' panoramic roof system, according to Gasgoo, the Chinese automotive media outlet that organises the annual awards. The ceremony is scheduled for 23 October 2026 in Shanghai under the theme 'Chinese solutions going global'.

From glazing to smart interface

The award recognises technologies that have moved beyond the lab into real products with clear industrial value, focusing on innovation, application results, market validation and potential for global expansion. Saint-Gobain's winning solution integrates zone-based dimming, thermal management and ambient lighting into a single panoramic glass roof, allowing the glazing to switch between different light-transmission states depending on driving conditions and cabin scenarios.

Beyond dimming, the roof's heat-insulation function supports cabin thermal comfort, while the ambient lighting technology merges light with glass to create what the company describes as an immersive cabin experience. Saint-Gobain argues the system does more than add a single feature: by fusing several technologies into one pane, the panoramic roof evolves from a traditional light-admitting component into an active participant in shaping the intelligent cabin experience.

From concept to production

According to the award application materials, the technology has already been applied on a luxury electric SUV platform. The integration of zone dimming, thermal management and ambient lighting in one system also helps simplify vehicle architecture and system integration, the company said. That track record of moving from research to mass production aligns closely with the award's focus on engineering feasibility and market acceptance.

The win is recognition not only of the technology's innovation but also of its practical application, Saint-Gobain said, adding that it will continue exploring how automotive glass can contribute to intelligence, comfort and personalised experiences in future cabins. As cabins become more digital, glass is taking on new roles beyond providing visibility and daylight, including privacy control, thermal comfort and ambience, the company noted.
