Geely has launched the refreshed Emgrand 'Up' series in China, a model line aimed at mainstream family buyers, with prices starting at 59,900 yuan (about $8,400) for a limited period. The new cars, announced on October 25, are built on the BMA global modular architecture and focus on exterior and interior upgrades, most notably the adoption of the Flyme Auto 2 smart cabin system, according to NetEase Auto.
The series comprises three variants, with a limited-time price range of 59,900 to 73,900 yuan (about $8,400 to $10,400). These are Chinese guide prices before taxes and incentives. Customers who purchase before November 30 can also claim a 9,000 yuan (about $1,270) cash discount, bringing the entry price down to 59,900 yuan. Additional offers include trade-in, data, and warranty packages.
Design and cabin upgrades
Exterior changes are subtle but noticeable. The front grille adopts a cleaner, through-type structure, and the front bumper gains black trim and a chrome strip for a sportier look. New 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels and a revised rear bumper with a chrome accent widen the visual stance. The car also introduces a new 'Alpine Gold' paint option. The Emgrand Up measures 4,630 mm long, 1,820 mm wide, with a 2,650 mm wheelbase, and offers a 495-litre boot.
Inside, the cabin features a brown-and-black dual-tone scheme with a new 'Dawn Brown' theme. The key change is a 12.8-inch floating touchscreen paired with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. The Flyme Auto 2 system supports dual-zone voice control with a 0.5-second response time, remote control via smartphone app, and OTA updates. It also includes a high-definition Amap 850 navigation with traffic-light countdown, plus a cloud-based app store with over 200 applications. The car supports multiple phone-connect protocols, including Flyme Link, Carlink, and HiCar.
For parking assistance, the Emgrand Up is equipped with a 540-degree transparent chassis view using four 1-megapixel cameras, covering a 2.5-metre radius around the vehicle, with wheel-track prediction to help novice drivers in tight spaces.
Powertrain unchanged
Mechanically, the new Emgrand carries over the existing 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, producing 88 kW (about 118 hp) and 150 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a CVT automatic or a five-speed manual gearbox. Fuel consumption is rated at 5.99 L/100 km for the manual and 6.19 L/100 km for the automatic, under WLTC conditions. The chassis was co-tuned by Chinese and European engineers, with body torsional stiffness exceeding 20,000 Nm per degree.
The launch marks Geely's effort to refresh its best-selling sedan for the budget-conscious family segment, competing with other Chinese compact cars in a market where price competition remains intense. The Emgrand has long been a staple in Geely's lineup, and the new 'Up' series aims to blend modern tech features with an accessible price point.
