China's passenger-vehicle market continued its shift toward electrification in August, with new-energy vehicles (NEVs) claiming 16 of the top 20 terminal-sales spots and fuel cars reduced to just four entries, according to data from Chinese outlet D1EV. The Nissan Sylphy and Volkswagen Magotan, long-standing benchmarks in the compact and midsize sedan segments, both fell out of the ranking entirely.
Terminal sales—a measure based on insurance registrations—totaled 1,529,309 vehicles in August, up 4.9% month on month but down 22.1% year on year. NEV sales reached 982,028 units, a 6.2% monthly increase but a 10.9% annual decline, pushing the NEV penetration rate to 64.2%, up 0.8 percentage points from July.
BEVs hold the line as PHEVs and EREVs slide
Among powertrain types, battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) were the most resilient, with terminal sales of 688,002 units, up 9% month on month and down just 3% year on year. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) fell 26% year on year to 295,747 units, while range-extender electric vehicles (EREVs) dropped 22.8% annually, continuing a sharp slide that D1EV attributes to high comparison bases and lingering consumer caution ahead of China's L3 autonomous-driving standard taking effect in July 2026.
The top-20 models combined for about 362,000 terminal sales, representing 23.6% of the August total, down from 24.8% a year earlier, indicating a continued decline in market concentration.
Model 3 rebounds, Xiaomi SU7 slips
Tesla's Model 3 saw the most dramatic swing, jumping from 2,113 units in July to 20,994 in August—a 893.6% surge. D1EV explains that Tesla's Shanghai plant prioritized exports in July, with 31,652 Model 3s shipped overseas, compressing domestic deliveries; August exports fell to 9,682 units, releasing pent-up domestic demand.
BYD's Xingyuan led the ranking for a second consecutive month with 39,486 units, up 21.4%. Leapmotor's A10 climbed to third with 24,984 units, a 37.8% monthly gain. BYD Dolphin and BYD Song Ultra also posted strong gains. Xiaomi's SU7, however, slipped from 20,995 units in July to 16,410 in August, a 21.8% drop, dropping it from third to ninth place amid intensifying competition in the BEV sedan segment.
The fuel-car retreat was stark: only four fuel models made the top 20—Toyota Corolla Cross, Toyota RAV4, Geely Xingyue L, and Geely Binyue—down from six a year earlier. Their combined sales of about 55,000 units accounted for just 15% of the top-20 total, down from 19% in July. No fuel vehicle appeared in the top 10, and the Sylphy and Magotan, which sold 11,418 units in August, were absent from the list entirely.
Six new-energy models entered the top 20 compared with a year earlier, including the Leapmotor A10, Li Auto i6, BYD Song Ultra, Wuling Binguo Pro, and Changan Q05. Meanwhile, the Wuling Hongguang MINI EV, once a pioneer of the A00 segment, fell out of the ranking, as did the BYD Seagull, BYD Seal 06, Aito M8, BYD Qin L, and Xpeng M03.
D1EV notes that the shift reflects a broader trend: consumers are moving from basic, low-cost vehicles to higher-quality NEVs in the 100,000–300,000 yuan (about $14,100–$42,300) price bracket, squeezing both traditional fuel sedans and entry-level mini EVs.
