Changan has launched the Hunter K70, which it calls the world's first range-extender off-road pickup, in China. The truck is offered in two standard versions: a 192,900 yuan ($27,200) model and a 207,900 yuan ($29,300) flagship variant, according to Chinese automotive outlet Electric Bond. A camper version, the K70 Feizhu, is also available for 249,800 yuan ($35,200).
Range-extender powertrain for off-road use
The K70 uses an EREV (range-extender) setup, combining a 43.47 kWh battery with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that acts as a generator. Changan claims a CLTC pure-electric range of 150 km and a combined range of 897 km. For context, the CLTC figure is typically 15-20% more optimistic than the WLTP standard, so a WLTP estimate would be around 760 km (est.). The setup is designed to reduce reliance on charging infrastructure during long-distance overland trips.
Power comes from dual electric motors with a combined output of 260 kW (349 hp) and 559 Nm of torque. The truck features a two-speed electric drive axle that multiplies wheel torque by three times in low-range mode, along with locking differentials for improved traction on sand, mud, and other challenging surfaces. Approach and departure angles are 38 and 28 degrees respectively, with 245 mm of ground clearance and a 650 mm wading depth. It rides on LT285/70 R17 all-terrain tyres and can tow up to 2.5 tonnes.
Changan positions the K70 as a tool for both recreational off-roading and work applications. It offers 10 driving modes, including sand, snow, mud, and wading, plus an off-road display showing altitude, coordinates, body angle, and differential lock status.
External power and camper version
A key selling point is the 30 kW external power discharge function, which can power heavy equipment, while a separate 3.3 kW outlet on the load bed handles smaller appliances like kettles and cooking gear. Changan says the truck can store up to 239 kWh of energy when fully fuelled and charged, enough to support a four-vehicle convoy for about six nights of camping based on 10 kWh per night.
The load bed measures 1600 x 1595 x 500 mm, offering 1,276 litres of space, and comes with a multi-function tailgate and folding step. The battery is supplied by CATL and features a cage-style protective structure, thermal management, and IP68 sealing.
The Feizhu camper version adds a removable aluminium-alloy camper shell with a 2m x 1.7m pull-out bed and a 1.6m x 0.6m folding bed, accommodating three to four people. It also includes a folding table, sink, 70-litre water tank, and shower kit, making it suitable for overnight stays in remote areas.
The K70 is part of Changan's Hunter pickup family, which also includes the K50 model aimed at drone operations, power line inspection, and emergency services. The K70 targets a more rugged, adventure-oriented buyer. Prices are Chinese guide prices before taxes and incentives, with the company also offering an 8,000 yuan cash discount and a 10,000 yuan trade-in subsidy during the launch period.
