BAIC Group has introduced a new brand called Xingtan and opened pre-sales for its first model, the Xingtan 5X, a large SUV positioned as a "smart over-class" vehicle for families. The pre-sale price ranges from 139,900 yuan to 184,900 yuan (about $19,700 to $26,000), according to Chinese outlet D1EV. The launch event took place on October 21 in Haikou, Hainan, with Asian Games champion Chen Yujie announced as the global brand ambassador.
The Xingtan 5X is available with either a battery-electric (BEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. The BEV version offers a CLTC range of 625 kilometers (about 388 miles; WLTP est. 500-530 km) and uses an 800V architecture, enabling a fast charge from 10% to 80% in about 14.5 minutes. The PHEV variant provides a pure-electric CLTC range of 310 km (about 193 miles; WLTP est. 248-263 km) and a combined range of 1,350 km (about 839 miles). Both versions feature dual 200 kW (268 hp) electric motors, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.
Design and interior
Xingtan 5X adopts a "refined rugged" design language, aiming to break the stereotype that boxy SUVs are crude. The vehicle measures 4,865 mm long, 2,000 mm wide, and 1,910 mm tall, with a wheelbase that supports a claimed 88.6% cabin space efficiency. The interior includes a 15.6-inch dual-screen setup, a 23-speaker sound system tuned by the National Centre for the Performing Arts, and an 8.2-liter refrigerator. Seats offer ventilation, heating, and graphene far-infrared massage functions.
The cabin is designed to meet maternal and infant safety standards, with three available fragrance options. The AI-powered cockpit, called Yuanjing, supports multi-command voice control and can integrate with external services, such as ordering coffee to be ready upon arrival at the office.
Safety and off-road capability
Xingtan 5X is equipped with Huawei's Qiankun ADS 5Pro, marking it as the first pure-electric boxy SUV to feature this advanced driver assistance system. It uses 27 sensors, including a solid-state lidar, cameras, and radar, with a novel "one-lens dual-mode" technology for distance measurement and imaging. The system can detect small obstacles like cats and dogs up to 100 meters away at night.
The vehicle includes a full collision avoidance system (CAS 5.0) that handles scenarios like pedestrians darting out at unprotected intersections, and a trail-reversing function that can retrace up to 120 meters. With a ground clearance of 228 mm, approach angle of 26 degrees, departure angle of 28 degrees, and wading depth of 600 mm, it is built for light off-roading, featuring a central energy lock, rear differential lock, and 14 terrain modes.
BAIC's self-developed Aurora battery pack is protected by a high-strength frame and is positioned 35 mm above the subframe for added safety. The company offers a lifetime warranty on the battery, motor, and electronic control for the first owner, along with a 5-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty.
During the pre-sale period, customers can access a package of benefits worth up to 30,000 yuan, including free upgrades for the audio system and paint, a 5-year financing plan with zero down payment and zero interest for the first two years, and a free charging pile. Deliveries are expected to begin after pre-sales conclude, with test drives available at dealerships nationwide.
